I have some pictures of Kashgar and other places of Xinjiang on my photo blog. You can see some of the old lanes (kocha) still intact in Kashgar:

I posted the above letter to the Party leader for 3 times, dreaming to have a chance to meet him even for 10 minutes. However,it is impossible.
I wrote a second letter to him too.
But I won't write the third letter though I worry or fear most.
Guns and tanks are not the right means to keep peace there,as I know.

So, what's your spin on recent event at Kashgar? Another domestic dispute gone wrong?

More "details" to be found on Global Times : http://www.globaltimes.cn/NEWS/tabid/99/articleType/ArticleView/articleId/667174/14-Uyghur-terrorists-killed-in-Hotan.aspx

Two interesting elements:
- I'm pretty puzzled by the first sentence, which mentions 14 shot dead and 4 arrested.
Such a mob clearly doesn't match with the usual meaning of "terrorist attack".

- The chief of the police station states : "I shouted in Uyghur, asking the rioters to stop … and to settle their dispute peacefully". I'd like to hear more about the subject of this dispute. By the way, ever heard of terrorists having a dispute with their victims before their attack?
It definitely smells funny (gotta love this expression).

Thanks anyway for your highly informative blog, and it's been a pleasure to read again from you!

As usual, the burden of proof falls on the government authorities to support the official version of events. There is certainly documentary evidence here somewhere (it seems this went on for over an hour) that would greatly clarify what actually happened... photos of destruction, weapons, the flag in question etc. but nothing is ever offered. So we end up getting these narratives with only a tenuous hold on the facts. I suppose the actual government reaction will be manifest in any policy changes or 'strike hard' campaigns in hotan, and probably throughout altishaar as well in the coming weeks.
