I was also an eyewitness together with my wife and 4 friends, staying in the same hotel; I've talked with AFP reporter next morning and have been quoted widely in the news after this event. I have two photos made of the scene. Although the whole event was very confusing - terrorists have been running around in police uniforms at high speed, cutting policemen using matchets - official reports have been fairly accurate, with 16 people dead and several critically wounded.

In any case, the absolutely non-transparent handling of the issue by Chinese authorities leaves room for unlimited speculation of what really happened. Since this speculation is restricted to media space outside of the realm that ordinary Chinese have access to, it doesn't bother the authorities much of course.
If the eye witness is reliable to any degree, his accocunt of the scene being hosed down a few hours after the events adds to this speculations. In the best of scenarious this reveals hair-raisingly unprofessional police work (not that unlikely), in the worst it hints at deliberate distortion of events.
