One problem about the Han Chinese is that a considerable number of them have no problem with hearing or making statements such as "we must have a serious crack down on those Uyghurs and Tibetans", "we must invade Japan and bring about a Tokyo massacre", or simply "be careful with those Uyghur looking people in our eastern cities: all of them in the cities are thieves." Yet, they might jump at you if you accuse them of being intolerant to the minority, be it people or opinions. I hate to say it, but I saw people behaving in this similar kind of manner (even I did the same thing), that is, in the kindergarten.

Dude, we're a blog. We're supposed to be skeptical. Oh, and if you think the government never paints Uyghurs as dangerous or radical, read Nur Bekri's speech - it's in Chinese, so you can probably read it! Oh, and about promoting ethnic harmony - the Chinese interviewed for this article refused to be named - they were too concerned to put their names out. Even the author of the article came in and admitted that. That's not ethnic harmony.

Dude, why are so skeptical of everything? The government never paints Uyghur as dangerous and radical terrorists ethnicity. This article is all about promoting ethnic harmony. Why do you still want to regard this in disbelief? You really think Han or CCP oppresses Uyghur?

Damn you! I was just about to do this story... i've been thinking: maybe we should combine our sites into a super site one of these days? Then I could concentrate on what I really enjoy... making stupid graphics.

It was not an organized visit; I travelled there on pure personal interest and had little direct contact with the local government. Tension, like I said in the story, is clearly still around as the ethnic Hans I talked to mostly declined to offer their names, which reminds me, however ill-related in nature, of a similar experience interviewing Indonesian-Chinese merchants in Jakarta a few months earlier. I stayed for a good five days inside Kashgar. For me the target of the conflict, or whatever you wish to call it, has shifted as of late. Fewer local Han residents are worrying about a religious attack against them; a great number has acknowledged that government institutions have become the target. In other words, signs of one, or many, clear-minded insurgency group(s) instead of an all-out jihad against non-believers of Islam. What is striking, though, is how the three sides (Uighur and Han residents as well as the government) tend to react in face of impending crises.
