Video: Gunned Down in the Streets of Urumqi, Machete in Hand

Analysis of this video is pending. It appears to be footage of the mosque incident on 7/14. It shows some guys stirring up some folks in a mosque, and then later actual footage of two men charging at the police with machetes and getting shot in the street.

This appears to be Urumqi — there is a red banner inside the mosque with Chinese characters. As for the scene outside with the men getting shot, there appears to be China Telecom advertising style signage on the side of the road, Chinese character banners, and the ubiquitous white barrier that separates the roads.

More analysis to come.

Very interesting video. While we can be grateful for the Chinese government taking the initiative and releasing documentary evidence (in contrast to the vast majority of instances) of some of the events in Urumqi, this footage also bolsters the arguments of human rights campaigners. It is obvious that there are multiple surveillance cameras in this mosque. Something tells me that these were not placed there at the request of security minded Imams. I doubt the leadership of Xinjiang considered that angle when deciding to release the video.

How can you tell that the two men in the video were actually “charging at police”? I don’t think that’s a foregone conclusion.

Many in the mosque seem to be shocked and intimidated at the agitators and move away from them quickly as they commence to raise their weapons and move out. The mullah or leader of prayers seems to be castigating them by pointing at them ( or…?) and quickly ends the prayer with the usual ‘amin’ it appears and the wiping of the hands across the face.

After the initial shots were fired the agitators were basically incapacitated and incapable of reaching the fleeing pedestrians (not police in the frame. At this point they could easily have been apprehended and subdued. Was it neccesary for them to be shot again and killed? If audio was available we could perhaps better understand the situation and what inspired the guys with weapons. Whatever the true scenario, the agitators definitly seemed crazed to a point.

I have a friend who has a police friend in Xinjiang. He tells him that Han are still getting killed in dark Uighur alleys. I wanted to go to see Kashgar before it got razed, but now it’s just too dangerous to go. I don’t see how things can get back to “normal” soon after this riot.
